Council Supports BMCC Bond Renewal

Release Date:
09/10/2013

The Hermiston City Council unanimously agreed to support the renewal of a bond measure by Blue Mountain Community College which will appear on ballots in November.  The key focus of the support comes from BMCC’s intention to use a portion of the revenue to build a Center for Sustainable Precision Irrigated Agriculture in Hermiston.

The precision irrigation center is viewed as an investment in fundamental economic development by teaching science, technology, engineering, and math skills with a specific focus on the region’s agricultural assets.

“The proposed Center for Precision Irrigated Agriculture will provide our region with the opportunity to capitalize on the vast knowledge resources already present in the area while developing the Hermiston area into a globally recognized region for irrigation research and technological development,” said Mayor Dave Drotzmann.  “In addition to the potential for spin-off businesses in irrigation technology, the workforce produced by the Center will greatly help our regional growers, and in turn benefit the various processors of our area’s agricultural commodities.”

The bond measure, proposed by BMCC will also provide funding for an Applied Animal Science program in Pendleton and an Industrial Process Workforce Development program in Boardman.  The bond measure will be a renewal of an existing BMCC bond, and not a new tax.
