Hermiston Energy Services Warns of Billing Scam

Release Date:
10/08/2012

Hermiston Energy Services was recently notified of an attempted billing scam where the scammer not only tried to con the victim of money, but threatened to kidnap the customer when questioned about the fraud.

The customer received a phone call from a Spanish-speaking caller who told him that the customer was late on his payment and the power would be shut off in 20 minutes unless payment was made.  The caller, who claimed to be from, “Cancellation Court,” told the customer to go to Wal-Mart, get a money card, and provide the number of the card over the phone.

The customer rightly told the caller that power companies don’t act this way, and that the call was clearly a fraud.  The caller then got angry and threatened to kidnap him.  Hermiston Police have since been notified.

In the event that a Hermiston Energy Services bill goes un-paid, customers first receive a reminder in the mail several days after the bill is initially due.  The mail notice is followed by an auto-call asking the customer to contact HES, which is followed by another payment reminder through the mail, then a second phone call.  If payment is still not made after all of these notifications, the customer receives a letter in the mail with a 72-hour notice that power will be turned off unless payment is made.
