Hermiston Police News: Bicyclist Injured

Release Date:

On the 29th of March 2012 at approximately 8:25 PM, the Hermiston Police Department initiated an investigation into a reported crash between a vehicle and a bicyclist after having received a call from a parent of one of the bicyclists.

As a result of the investigation, Alden Jemmett, 28 years of age of 1105 SW 10th Street, Hermiston, was arrested for Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver to Injured Persons.  Jemmett was processed at the Hermiston Police Department and later lodged at the Umatilla County Jail.

Based on statements made to our officers, it is believed Jemmett unintentionally struck the bicyclists (one bicycle with two riders) in the intersection of W Division and SW 10th Street.  Jemmett initially stopped to check on the duo but left to go to a meeting after promising to replace the bicycle the following morning.  Mr. Jemmett did provide some information to the juveniles with regard to his name, but not as required by law.

The victims ages 10 and 12 were treated for minor injuries and evaluated at Good Shepherd Hospital.

“We do not believe Mr. Jemmett acted with any malice in this incident.  Oregon statute however is very clear with regard to what a driver is supposed to do in the event of a crash.  For this matter, Mr. Jemmett should have notified the police to investigate the matter at the time of the crash,” says Acting Chief Jason Edmiston
