Release Date:
06/27/2011

On the 25th of June 2011, at approximately 1:49 PM, the Hermiston Police Department responded to the area of North 1st Place (Old River Road) near the City of Hermiston Wastewater Treatment Facility on a report of a two vehicle collision. Officers arrived on scene of the crash which was approximately 500 feet just inside the city limits.

Jason D. Sparks, 26 years of age of 565 NW 23rd Street, Hermiston, was operating a 2006 Chevrolet 3500 pickup with Oregon registration plates 237DFA, northbound on North 1st Place.

Jonathan C. Newkirk, 27 years of age of 410 E Utah Street, Irrigon, was operating a 1981 Toyota Corolla with Oregon registration plates 456CXG, southbound on North 1st Place.

The investigation is ongoing yet preliminary findings are that Newkirk’s vehicle left the lane of travel and entered the northbound lane, colliding with Sparks’ pickup. Newkirk was pronounced deceased at the scene and Sparks was transported to the Good Shepherd Hospital.

Excessive speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision. No citations were issued as a result of this collision. Next of kin were notified by this agency.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
