Hermiston will soon feature several new soccer fields to serve a rapidly growing demand in the area; a demand that was highlighted by the city’s recently formed Hispanic Advisory Committee.

The committee, which held its first meeting in June, was formed to facilitate better communication between members of the Hispanic community and city elected officials and staff on major community issues.  Through the work of the Hispanic Advisory Committee, and a soccer stakeholders group, the City Council has reached a 33 year agreement with the Hermiston School District to develop two to three new soccer fields at a major cost-savings to tax payers.

The successful agreement to develop soccer fields is just one example of anticipated long-term success of the Hispanic Advisory Committee said Eddie De La Cruz, committee Chairman.

“This is an historic event,” De La Cruz said of the agreement, “because it shows how closely the city can work with the Hispanic community, and how Hermiston is truly an inclusive community.”

George Anderson, City Councilor, thanked all the members of the Hispanic community for pointing out the need for more soccer fields, and hopes that this success will lead more community members to get involved in issues affecting them.

“This committee was formed to listen to the Hispanic community, and not only did the committee listen, but the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager have listened.
