City Seek Recommendations for Enhancement Projects

The City of Hermiston is looking for ways to enhance the aesthetics and livability of the community, and needs input from the public.  The Community Enhancement Committee has already developed a preliminary draft of ideas for projects to enhance the community, and before making a recommendation to the City Council, would like to solicit any additional ideas that they may not have thought of.  Residents may SUBMIT IDEAS by 5 p.m. on May 7.

Public Invited to Discuss Potential Landscaping Ordinance

Hermiston, Ore. – The public is invited to attend an open house to review and offer comments on a potential ordinance which would set minimum landscaping standards for all new commercial, industrial, and multi-family residential developments in Hermiston.  The open house will begin at 4 p.m. on May 7, 2015 at Hermiston City Hall, and run until 6 p.m.

A Charter can be thought of as a city’s Constitution.  It is the basic document which sets the table for how the city government operates, as well as what laws the city can create. 

Hermiston's Total Utility Costs Remain Most Affordable

Water and Sewer rates will increase by another 4% on January first.  The rise is the third part of a 4-stage 16% increase in rates approved in October, 2013.  The latest increase means bills will rise by about $2.34 per month for an average residential customer.  Despite the increases, Hermiston continues to have some of the most affordable utility rates in Eastern Oregon.

Hermiston Awarded $2M for New Senior Center

The City of Hermiston received notice that it will receive $2 Million to design and construct a new Senior Center.  This is particularly good news for the Hermiston seniors since their existing building is scheduled to be permanently closed at the end of 2015 as part of the Umatilla Fairgrounds relocation to the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center.  The current center “has been operating at the fairgrounds here for decades…” says Irene Miller, President of the Senior Center Board. “… we are so delighted to get the funding.”

HURA Issues First Facade Grant, Funds Still Available

The City of Hermiston has issued its first reimbursement award for an Urban Renewal District Facade Grant.  Businesses and property owners in the downtown area are encouraged to apply for these funds which have been dedicated to help improve and upgrade the appearance of properties in the downtown.

Scammers are swindling utility customers across the country – including Umatilla Electric Cooperative and Hermiston Energy Service customers. The scam involves a phone call to a customer by a con artist posing as a utility employee seeking an immediate payment for service.
