Hermiston Police News: Bad Act Leads to Bites

Release Date:
08/10/2015

On the 7th of August 2015, at approximately 4:20 PM, Zachary T. Knaus 26 years of age of 1115 E Gladys Ave, Hermiston, was placed under arrest for Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle and Theft in the Second Degree. Mr. Knaus is alleged to have unlawfully entered an unlocked vehicle in the 800 block of W. Ridgeway Ave and stole $105 in cash out of a wallet.

Knaus fled on foot after an observant neighbor spotted him exiting the vehicle. Officers canvassed the area within minutes and set up a perimeter. After approximately 15 minutes on the lam, Knaus was taken into custody by Officer Mike Ellwood. Officer Ellwood noticed Knaus was scratched and had torn clothing. It was later learned while fleeing through backyards to elude pursuing officers and friends of the victim, Knaus came into contact with several dogs.

Knaus was offered medical attention but denied it. Knaus was charged and lodged at the Umatilla County Jail on a detainer warrant issued by parole and probation.

“Mr. Knaus was out walking the streets looking for an opportunity to victimize someone. This is why it is so critical for our citizenry to remove valuables from vehicles and lock the doors. Whether it is real or not, it would appear some kind of Karma came into play as Knaus was pursued out of the backyards and onto the streets where officers captured him,” reports Chief Jason Edmiston.
