Hermiston Police News: HPD Investigates Shooting - UPDATED

Release Date:
01/23/2015

Update:

Though it not much information, this should serve as the update I had mentioned previously.

Of the people we know were involved in this incident:

  • Giovanni A. Avila, 21 yoa of Umatilla – gunshot victim
  • Raul Frias, 22 yoa of Umatilla – head injury victim
  • Mitcheal (actual spelling) H. Thompson, 20 yoa of Umatilla
  • 17 year old sibling of Avila of Umatilla

No additional information.  Detectives are continuing their investigation which includes interviewing potential witnesses and/or others with any information, attempting to collect surveillance footage from nearby stores in hopes something may be of value, etc. etc.

We were told during our last check on the gunshot victim he was still in critical condition with slight improvement based on internal bleeding being under control.

As insinuated earlier, this is going to be a very difficult crime to solve unless we are given more information to pursue.  Unfortunately we have very limited information to dig into.

On the 22nd of January 2015 at approximately 10PM, the Hermiston Police Department responded to Foxwood Apartments located at 1072 W Orchard Ave on a report of a person having been shot after being involved in a dispute.

This investigation is continuing and therefore information at this time will be limited. What is known is the following:

  • (4) males ages 17, 20, 21, and 22 all from the city of Umatilla came to Hermiston and were involved in a dispute with at least 3 other unknown males
  • During the dispute an unknown firearm was discharged and the 21 year old male was struck in the chest area and was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital
  • The 22 year old male sustained head injuries as a result of the fight and was also transported to Good Shepherd Hospital where he was held overnight for observation
  • Though we have an initial story/account of what transpired we firmly believe there is more information to glean from this investigation – we are hopeful to gain more assistance from those involved
  • The 21 year old was later transported to Legacy Emanuel in Portland. As of 7:20AM a surgery had been performed and he is listed in critical condition in the neuro trauma ICU

"As is often the case in major crimes such as this, events takes place and law enforcement is left trying to connect dots and ascertain what truly happened versus what a person wants us to believe happened. We are diligently working this investigation with the assistance of the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office and hopefully will have more information available at the end of the day." stated Chief Jason Edmiston.
