Smith Named as City Manager Selection

Release Date:

Hermiston will soon have a new City Manager.  The City Council unanimously agreed Monday night to offer an employment contract to Byron Smith to replace retiring City Manager Ed Brookshier.

“It’s exciting to look forward to the future, because I think we have a good one in Mr. Smith,” said Mayor David Drotzmann.  “His broad experience with many different types of cities, as well as his experience with cities similar to Hermiston make him a great fit to continue our area’s growth well in to the future.”

Smith has been the City Manager for the City of Fort Madison, Iowa, since 2009.  Prior to that he was Assistant City Manager/City Planner for the City of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, for three years, and he was with the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1998 to 2004.  Mr. Smith has a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Kansas, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, and an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from Eastern Arizona College.

Smith, who is currently the City Manager for the City of Fort Madison Iowa, was selected through a nation-wide search process led by the Prothman Company.  The City Council solicited input from the community this Spring about the key attributes which residents would like to see in the new City Manager.  The four finalists for the position also met with members of the public at a reception on June 19, where residents could offer their thoughts to Council Members.  The final round of interviews also included community members on two interview panels on June 20.
