Hermiston Rate Payers Enjoy Low Costs

Release Date:
11/07/2012

Hermiston utility rate payers save big bucks each year compared to many of their eastern Oregon counterparts.  That’s according to a recent survey of other similar-sized cities in the region that showed the annual savings for an average Hermiston resident at between $250 and $770, depending on the comparable city.

The survey compared the “total utility burden,” or the sum of all utilities where the city controls the rates.  The total utility burden takes a big-picture look at overall affordability of a community’s services, because some communities may have very low rates for one service, but very high rates for another.

The average Hermiston resident can boast the cheapest water and garbage bills among all of the surveyed cities, which included The Dalles, Pendleton, La Grande, Baker City, and Ontario.  Hermiston rate payers can also boast the second cheapest electricity and sewer bills out of all of the surveyed cities.

When the bills for all of the utility services are combined, the average Hermiston user pays $142 per month for their total utility burden.  The burden is $163 in Baker City, $181 in Ontario, $185 in La Grande, $188 in The Dalles, and $207 in Pendleton.

More information about the methodology of the rate survey, as well as a further break-down of the rate comparison can be found on the City of Hermiston website at www.hermiston.or.us/utility-burden. Interested residents can also pick up a quick and easy utility burden pamphlet at City Hall which breaks down Hermiston’s costs against the other surveyed cities.
