What is Hermiston 2040?

Hermiston 2040 is our community engagement effort to build a vision for the future of our community. 

We looked to those of you who live, work and play here to help us create the guiding vision for Hermiston’s future. This road map, anchored in the people of Hermiston’s values, will chart the way our city will look, feel and work over the next 20 years, and we were only able do it with your help. Hermiston 2040 is our community engagement effort to build a vision for the future of Hermiston. The vision will create the blueprint for decisions about our community, including investments, collaboration, and partnerships. What we identified and created in this vision will be the foundation for the next 20 years in our community. Your ideas, thoughts and inspirations about what could make this place even better were collected, explored, and emphasized in this vision as a shared community vision that has the potential to inspire new goals and policies, and influence the approach to future development.

Why Did we Start this Process?

We’re growing. We’re the fastest growing city in Eastern Oregon and with growth comes change. We wanted to know how you, the people who live, work and play here, want to see the future. With this, we can create a longterm vision - which has been completed - that reflects your ideas for how we guide the growth and changes to our community. 

Who was Involved in this Process?

The City of Hermiston was leading the project with the support of many community partners. Members of the Hermiston 2040 Vision Team represented perspectives from diverse community groups that oversaw the project and ensured everyone had a chance to share ideas and shape the future of Hermiston. The goal of this project was to create our long-term community vision, our road map to make our envisioned future a reality.

Hermiston 2040 is the Vision for the Future of our Community

Over the past year (2021), we received thousands of comments with ideas to improve the future of Hermiston, including economic development, transportation and mobility, recreational opportunities, public safety, education, infrastructure, healthcare, cultural diversity, and more. We explored these ideas with community members at vision labs and refined them into goal areas with action items to achieve each goal. We presented the draft goals and action items at the community open house and further refined the plan to align with community priorities.

AND....... We did it! Together, we envisioned a future for our community rooted in our shared values. Thank you to the thousands of community members who helped shape Hermiston’s future.

The City Council adopted the vision in January 2022 and now a new chapter begins – bringing the vision to life; and we can only do it with your help. Please join us to make Hermiston the best place to live, work, and play for years to come.
