The City of Hermiston is excited to announce the upcoming expansion of the Harkenrider Senior Activity Center. Since its inception in 2018, the Harkenrider Center has served as a vibrant hub for our senior community, offering a variety of activities, events, and programs tailored to enrich the lives of our older residents. With a vision to further enhance our community offerings, we are poised to embark on a significant project that promises to add a new dimension to the center's capabilities.

Project Overview

At the heart of this expansion is the Harkenrider Center's unfinished basement, a 4,000 square-foot space envisioned to be transformed into a dynamic area for additional events, meetings, and programs. Recognizing the potential of this space, the City of Hermiston has laid out plans to fully develop this area to accommodate the growing needs of our community.

Design and Planning

In the Summer of 2023, we took a significant step forward by partnering with Hacker Architects, a firm renowned for its innovative and community-focused designs. Hacker Architects has been tasked with crafting a space that is not only functional but also welcoming and versatile, capable of hosting a wide range of activities and gatherings.

Construction Timeline

Construction is slated to begin in early spring 2024, with a goal to complete the project by Summer 2024.

Features and Benefits

Upon completion, the project will unveil almost 3,000 square feet of additional space, meticulously designed to enhance the Harkenrider Center's offerings. This expansion will allow for:

  • Increased Capacity for Events: More space means the ability to host larger gatherings, from social activities to educational workshops, providing our seniors with more opportunities to engage, learn, and connect.
  • Flexible Meeting Spaces: The design will include versatile meeting areas that can be adapted for various functions, ensuring that community groups and organizations have access to a conducive environment for their activities.
  • Enhanced Program Offerings: With additional room, we can diversify and increase our program offerings, catering to a broader range of interests and needs within our senior community.

Looking Ahead

The Harkenrider Center Basement Expansion Project represents a significant investment in the well-being and enrichment of Hermiston's senior community. We are enthusiastic about the opportunities this project will bring and the positive impact it will have on our ability to serve our residents better.

Stay tuned for more updates as we progress toward making this vision a reality, and join us in anticipating the enhanced community space that awaits. Together, we are building a brighter, more vibrant future for the City of Hermiston, Where Life is Sweet!
